The trend of poor performance by Orissa in Ranji Trophy East Zone tournament extended further as they lost to Bengal by an innings and 216 runs on the third and last day at Eden Gardens, Calcutta today. This was Orissa’s 13th defeat and 10th by an innings in 14 Ranji Trophy matches against Bengal.
While Orissa as team bite dust, Ashokananda Jena excelled in individual capacity, scoring half-century in both the innings. Put into bat, Orissa were skittled out for 94 with Jena remaining unbeaten on 53. In reply, Bengal declared at 451 for four, which gave them a lead of 357 runs.
Bengal captain Pankaj Roy and Ambar Roy flayed the Orissa bowlers, hitting 139 and 116 not out respectively. Debabrata Mukherjee and Shyam Sundar Mitra compounded the misery for Orissa, scoring a half-century each.
In the second innings, Orissa folded up for 141 to suffer the huge defeat. Ashokananda Jena once again waged a lone battle for Orissa, scoring 61. Aloke Das and VV Rama Rao made first-class debut for Orissa in this match. Madan Mohan Mohanty led the Orissa team for the first time, replacing N N Swamy.
